That's a neat cross-collectible - a bank and a car!
Comment by One Red Hen on May 1, 2012 at 9:06pm I didn't go to that World's Fair, but I do remember the hype because it was in New York City - a 2 hour drive from where I lived and I was 12 years old then. I bought this at a garage sale years ago just because it appealed to me, but no key came with it, so I can open up the bottom, but since I'm not using it as a bank, I guess it doesn't matter.
I remember for a long time I kept a silver dollar and an old Canadian penny in the mailbox bank. Even as a young child, it didn't take me very long to realize I could get coins back out by simply upending the bank. I also thought it was cool to show on the outside how much money you could save in a year by putting the same coin in every day.
Worlds Fair items are doing pretty well at the moment and yours looks to be in very nice condition - did you attend?
I like your mailbox too - cute!

Mechanical banks are the prime banks, but many are being reproduced. Watch out for fakes. I just collect what I like no matter the value (or lack of). Here some info:

Comment by John Schindler II on February 5, 2012 at 11:27pm What can I look for in a good bank? Is it what is made out of, or the general theme of the bank (like Uncle Sam, or one the actually looks like a pig)?
