I am trying to identify a piece of furniture. It looks like a bench with a backboard that slides up and down out of the backrest. It also has 2 drawers below the seat. Could someone tell me what this piece of furniture is called and what it is used for? What is the purpose of the backboard? Thank you.

It is called a HALL TREE.  The sliding back is a bit puzzling, as they usually have hooks for coats and such, but Google it and you will see.
