A Community For People Who Buy, Sell or Collect Antiques, Collectibles and Art

Does anybody here have some stories to tell regarding 'haunted' antiques? I recently bought a lot of stuff from estate sales (antique paintings, photos, mugs, etc) and it just didn't occur to me that any of those could have some sort of unseen "souvenirs". I am just fascinated with collecting antique stuff. Don't want any excess baggage!

I think we had a haunted car once. The car was a Mustang Cobra that the guy babied and adored. Unfortunately, he killed himself in it and a few years later we bought it from his dad. He was never malicious, he just liked to go really fast. The gas peddle would get away from you when you were traveling the interstate or some other "open" road. He had built the car for speed and it showed. When the peddle would push itself down, we just said "Mike, we need to slow down, there's traffic out here" and the peddle came back to normal. It happened to me, it happened to my then-husband, it even happened to friends of ours that drove it. My husband loved that car, too and being a good mechanic he tried to solve the problem for years. Crazy, but true.

And on one other note, I had to get rid of a gorgeous collection of porcelain ladies. It always felt like they were being moved a little, and they just had a creepiness to them. I had gotten them at an estate sale and displayed them in my bedroom. I sold them. Do I believe they were haunted? Don't know, but I know they were beautiful and creepy.

Let me guess ... did you name the Cobra "Christine" ... LOL

Just curious ... previous owner killed himself in it ... in a crash? If so, what shape was the car in?

It's a tragic story - he shot himself in the head in the car. Very wealthy, very troubled, drug addicted young man. So...the car had been detailed thoroughly and re-carpeted. Beautiful interior. It was a great car - never left us stranded, never had any major mechanical issues, ran like a dream. My ex-husband and the young man's dad (his boss) became very close. I think it was a good match.
Also the hotel the man owns is very definitely haunted. I won't name names, but it's listed in Colorado as a haunted hotel, and it's no joke - I've seen two ghosts there, and I HATE seeing ghosts. One is a woman, she strolls the halls. The other is a cowboy, he just sits around and seems to watch people. I've heard of more malicious ghosts, one being a child. The place has an historical and colorful past and I would dare anyone to say it isn't haunted once they stayed in a certain wing for a night. Yep, creepy.

I would hate to see any ... fortunately, never have! Is this the hotel that inspired King's "The Shining?"

No, the last I heard some large corporation bought the Stanley in Estes Park, the movie that was the inspiration for the film. Don't remember which one right now, tho. This isn't that hotel. I think Colorado has a disproportionate amount of haunted hotels due to the regions Native American past, gold rush craziness and world traveler appeal. There's supposed to be an old Indian curse on the small county I lived in that stated that no marriage would survive and no family would find happiness - something about how we've moved the river and unjoined it from the land... I never knew anyone that wasn't divorced there (including me).

My mother in law claims that the grandfather clock her dad sent home from Germany is haunted. We've had it for almost two years now and nothing out of the ordinary. My husband is restoring it so it will work again though, so maybe the spirit is happy.

Why is it the underwear that is always 'haunted' and 'missing in action'! LOL

Yeah, and when you finally throw the odd sock out, the little MIA one will come back.

I would think that if an item was haunted that it wouldn't go bad because the new owner would be caring for the item. I think that it might been seen in a good light by the spirit.

I know that with me every single time Forest Green Charm passes through my hands either as a buy or a sell, there has been a very personal story about "grandma". And the stories start at the other end. The people are either restoring a set or need to have this particular pattern get a good home.
