Date this metal wrapped (?) walking stick/cane

I have a habit of picking up items without knowing much about it and here's another case.

Looks like an old walking stick made out of metal and wrapped with leather(?) 

Can anyone provide a time period when this may have been produced/used and is there a proper name for such an item ?

Your description, "looks like" isn't very descriptive, especially when you end the sentence with a question mark. Saying it's magnetic would have helped.

Looks like wood to me, Vicki also. Most of them are wood.  Now that I know it's steel or iron, it looks like a rusty section of rebar which beckons the question, how did it get so rusty?  Flood damage maybe?

Would I be correct in assuming that wood walking sticks came before metal wrapped ones ?
