Event Description

Skinner, Inc., one of the world's leading auction houses for antiques and fine art, will host its spring auction of Fine Wines on May 13tht at 6 p.m. in its Boston gallery at 63 Park Plaza. The sale, realized through a partnership with Lower Falls Wine Company of Newton, MA, will offer over 500 extensive lots of fine vintage Bordeaux, Burgundy, Italian, Spanish and New World wines, representing the most extensive sale of the Fine Wine department to date.

The sale begins with an impressive, 17 lot collection of highly desirable first growth Bordeaux from a Boston cellar. Of particular note in this starting consignment is a 12 bottle lot of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1986 estimated at $9,000-14,500. The finest producers of Bordeaux from around the world are represented throughout the sale including Chateau Latour, Chateau Petrus, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Cheval Blanc and Chateau Margaux. Highlights include a 12 bottle lot of Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982, estimated at $25,000 to $35,000 a particularly impressive lot as the prices of Bordeaux continue to reflect the market’s increased appreciation for this spectacular wine. Further, a number of lots featuring 1961 Bordeaux, the last great example of “old” school Bordeaux, are included including a 4 bottle lot of Chateau Petrus, estimated at $22,000 to $32,000, in stunning condition.

According to Marie Keep, Director, Fine Wines, Skinner Inc. “We are encouraged as the market continues to acknowledge fine wine as a serious and significant investment. As such, the quality of Bordeaux represented in this sale is unprecedented and offers a rare opportunity to purchase some of the finest wine on the market. Always a social event, we look forward to the excitement around the sale and anticipate great competition among buyers.”

Unlike any other, this sale boasts the most variety across regions. From Spain, many elegant lots from the Priorat, Ribera del Duero and Rioja regions are included as well as from Jumilla, an 18 bottle lot of El Nido, Clio, estimated at $1,050 to$1,600. Italy is also wonderfully represented including, from the region of Piedmont, a 12 bottle lot of La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barolo Campe estimated at $700 to $1,200 as well as a 12 bottle lot of Roberto Voerzio Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata Torriglione, 2004, estimated at $1,600 to $2,200. New World producers also make a splash including Jos. Phelps, Pride Mountain Vineyards, and from Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select, 2002, a 6 bottle lot estimated at $1,800 to $2,000.

A number of wonderful producers of Burgundian wine are well represented including Domaine de la Romanee Conti, from their monopole vineyards La Tache and Romanee Conti, as well as an assortment case from 2000. As always, the sale rounds out to offer a number of true tasting lots, ideal for dinner parties or picnics, just in time for the warm weather.

“We are thrilled to offer the most impressive and extensive sale in our history of fine wine auctions-from the finest Bordeaux to some of the most varied and intriguing group lots yet. As such, this sale offers something for everyone -from the long time collector and serious investor, to social wine drinkers and enthusiasts alike.”
