MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – February 7, 2012 – Skinner, Inc. will host a Discovery auction on February 16th in its Marlborough gallery. The one-day sale boasts eight hundred lots. Among the wide selection of material featured, bidders will find hundreds of lots of Asian offerings including carved jade and ivory, Chinese export porcelain, brush pots, scrolls, and hardwood furnishings. The remaining lots represent a variety of styles and time periods, including Federal and Victorian furnishings, European tableware, oil paintings, and Persian rugs for new and experienced collectors alike.
Asian Works of Art
Asian material will be featured in this Discovery sale with more than 250 lots on offer. Interesting examples include a pair of Chinese T'ang-style glazed ceramic horse figures (lot 1252, estimated between $800 and $1,200) and various other figurines including an Asian bronze figure depicting a seated female with child (lot 1024, $600 to $800).
Glass, Porcelain & Ceramics
A brilliant cut glass bunch bowl (lot 1276, $300 to $500) will be offered, along with many other items for entertaining, including an 82-piece Flow Mulberry Ironstone partial dinner service (lot 1188, $1,500 to $2,500). The set is in the Corean Pattern, manufactured by Podmore, Walker & Company, England, circa 1850. A seventy-piece Spode Partial Dinner service in Colonel Pattern (lot 1300, $200 to $300) will also be sold. Lot 1338 ($200 to $300) is a set of hand-painted ceramic tiles by Minton Hollins. These beautifully rendered and evocative tiles make use of a temporal theme and feature the months of the year and the four times of day.
Furniture and Textiles
Several mahogany furnishing include a classical circular table with central diamond-shaped inlay (lot 1192, $300 to $400) and a mahogany hunt board with tapering legs is available (lot 1185, $800 to $1,200). Interesting textiles include Northwest Persian Shahsavan Soumak Cargo Bags in various sizes (lots 1196 and 1126, both estimated between $150 and $250).
Skinner’s monthly Discovery auctions feature fine art finds for the ‘everyday’ collector. Recently recognized by Boston Magazine as ‘Best of Boston for antiques west of the city,’ the monthly sale allows buyers to discover and own collectible pieces of history.

Previews, Catalogue and Bidding
