Event Description

BOSTON, Mass. – September 19, 2013 – Skinner, Inc. will host an auction of Fine Judaica on October 3rd in its Boston Gallery. The sale features property from the estate of Nahum Goldmann, artwork by Ilya Schor, silver ceremonial items, Torah ornaments, as well Jewish art and books.

Property from the Estate of Nahum Goldmann

Skinner is pleased to offer items from the personal collection of Nahum Goldmann (1895-1982), one of the most prominent leaders of the Jewish people and the Zionist movement in the 20th century. The selection offered includes works from his library, notably an illustrated Seder Haggadah shel Pesach manuscript, Pressburg, 1735 by the scribe-artist Aaron Wolf Herlingen (lot 14, estimated between $200,000 and $300,000). Herlingen was one of the finest Jewish calligraphers working during the 18th century renaissance of Hebrew manuscripts. His earliest recorded manuscript is dated 1720 and his body of work includes only 40-50 known examples. Another important manuscript from Goldmann’s estate is a signed, Moses Mendelssohn manuscript letter from 1767 (lot 22, $3,000 to $5,000).

Works by Ilya Schor

A collection of works by artist Ilya Schor includes four silver jewelry items from the 1950s (lot 142, $300 to $500), twelve illustrations for The Sabbath by Abraham Heschel (lot 149, $800 to $1,200), and an untitled rare brass and copper rivet sculpture from the late 1950s (lot 148, $10,000 to $15,000). Schor is recognized as a master of 20th century American Jewish art and Judaica, translating and interpreting memories of the shtetl life of Eastern Europe in his works through media that range from painting and graphic arts to silver and metal sculpture.

Jewish Art & Spice Containers

A range of works by the Bezalel School of Arts & Crafts and mid-century Israeli artists with international reputations will be offered. Highlights include an early 20th century Bezalel brass framed ivory plaque by Boris Schatz (lot 139, $800 to $1,200), an iron Hanukkah lamp by David Palombo (lot 125, $250 to $350), and an Eva Samuel glazed ceramic Hanukkah lamp (lot 126, $300 to $500).

A large assortment of spice containers will be available, including a polish silver and parcel-gilt spice container, formed as a neoclassical urn filled with flowers (lot 74, $2,000 to $3,000), and a Bezalel silver and silver filigree spice container (lot 128, $300 to $500).
